My younger daughter has always been a whirlwind of creative energy. From early childhood, she expressed herself through various artistic endeavors – writing heartfelt poetry, hand-painting unique designs on T-shirts, and constantly sketching in her notebooks. But above all, her true obsession lay with the camera. She’d capture moments, big and small, with an unwavering passion for photography.
A few years ago, her creative trajectory found a new focus. She stumbled upon a captivating YouTube channel run by a local creator, a young man who produced engaging videos right here in our hometown. While they hadn’t met, this discovery struck a profound chord with my daughter. The fact that this inspiring individual wasn’t some distant, celebrity vlogger in a far-off city, but a neighbor making magic happen, truly ignited her imagination. “I want to be a YouTuber, just like that guy!” she declared, her eyes gleaming with newfound purpose. This proximity transformed a lofty dream into an incredibly tangible goal.
The Journey to InaTheTeaLady: A Dream Realized
Fast forward to today, and I’m immensely proud to say that her dream has indeed come true. She is now a burgeoning YouTuber, known online as InaTheTeaLady, and she owes a significant part of her journey to “that guy.” Life has a funny way of weaving connections; serendipitously, they now attend the same school and have become friends. When she received an invitation to his birthday party, a delightful dilemma arose: what do you get for the person who sparked such an incredible surge of creativity and determination?
She pondered this question deeply. A simple book or a generic gift wouldn’t suffice; inspiration, after all, isn’t something you can buy off a shelf. It’s a spontaneous burst of color, like a kaleidoscope against the sky, as I often muse (perhaps her artistic spirit is rubbing off on me!). She insisted that the gift had to be something related to video production. An excellent idea! Unfortunately, finding a truly unique, video-centric gift locally proved challenging. That’s when our family’s DIY spirit kicked in. Being a household that thrives on hands-on projects, we collectively decided to create something special ourselves.
Crafting Gratitude: Our DIY Clapperboard Project

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Our Custom Clapperboard:
Our journey began with two essential pieces of wood. The larger, rectangular plywood would form the main body of our clapperboard, providing the canvas for the iconic design. The second, a longer and slimmer piece, was destined to become the crucial “clapper” arm.
To create the distinct hinged mechanism of a clapperboard, we carefully cut the longer, slimmer piece of wood precisely in half. This would allow the two resulting pieces to pivot against each other, creating that satisfying “clap” sound.
Next, we attached these two smaller pieces together using robust hinges. This crucial step formed the foundational ‘clapping’ element, ensuring smooth movement and a clear, audible snap when brought together. Finding the right size hinges was an adventure in itself, proving that even small details can involve a learning curve for our DIY family!
With the hinged top piece assembled, the next step was to securely fasten this mechanism to the main plywood base. Careful alignment was key here to ensure the clapperboard would function correctly and look professionally made.
We carefully positioned the hinged clapper assembly at the top edge of the larger plywood piece. This required precision to ensure the clapper would meet the main board flush and create the desired sound. The attachment was done securely with screws, making sure it could withstand repeated use on a film set!
Once the structural components were in place, the true magic began, as my daughter took the reins. With the plywood construction complete, it was her turn to bring the clapperboard to life with her artistic vision. She meticulously outlined the classic clapperboard design onto the plywood surface, carefully sketching the sections for “Scene,” “Take,” “Director,” and “Camera.”
Her next step involved applying chalk paint to fill in all the designated black areas of the design. Chalk paint provided a lovely matte finish, perfect for the authentic look of a film clapperboard. She worked with precision, ensuring crisp lines and full coverage, truly immersing herself in the creative process.
No detail was overlooked, including the back of the clapperboard. While often unseen, she ensured it was cleanly painted, reflecting the care put into every aspect of this special gift. A true artist values the unseen as much as the visible.
To clearly define the individual compartments – “Scene,” “Take,” etc. – she meticulously added crisp white lines. This stark contrast against the black chalk paint made the board functional and visually striking, just like a real professional clapperboard.
With numerous finishing touches, the clapperboard truly came to life. Each line, each painted section, contributed to the overall authenticity and charm. By this point, the resemblance was undeniable. Had you guessed what it was yet?
That’s right – it was a fully functional, handmade clapperboard! A perfect tribute to the young man who inspired my daughter to delve into the world of YouTube and video creation.
