Discovering Greece Through My Favorite Things: An International Bloggers Club Journey

This month, we embarked on a truly distinctive and personal challenge. Our brilliant friend Katrin of KreativK, known for her innovative approach to project aesthetics, suggested we try a flat lay photo shoot. But this wasn’t just any flat lay; the twist was to incorporate our absolute favorite things that resonate deeply with our respective countries. It was an invitation to pause, reflect, and celebrate the small, tangible aspects that define our homeland and hold special meaning for us.

For me, this challenge became an opportunity to express my profound connection to Greece, a land steeped in history, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. As I gathered the items that speak most eloquently of my Greek identity, I found myself on a journey of rediscovery, appreciating anew the elements that make this country so uniquely enchanting. The Dazzling Light and Iconic Blue & White

Greece is undeniably a symphony of blue and white. These aren’t just the colors of our proud flag; they are the pervasive hues that greet me every single day, from the endless expanse of the Aegean sky to the whitewashed walls of island villages. This vibrant palette is woven into the very fabric of Greek life and landscape, an ever-present reminder of our identity.

And then there are the sunglasses – an absolute necessity, not merely a fashion accessory. When we speak of the famed bright light of Greece, it’s not an exaggeration. The intensity of the Mediterranean sun is truly remarkable; stepping outdoors without sunglasses guarantees a perpetual squint. This brilliant light sharpens every detail, making colors appear more vivid and landscapes breathtakingly dramatic. The sky, in particular, is a shade of blue so deep and pure it often feels surreal, an ever-present masterpiece above us.

To be entirely honest, the sun’s intensity can sometimes be a bit much for me personally. However, I adore the transformative effect it has, illuminating everything with such a radiant glow. Beyond the aesthetic, there’s a tangible benefit: all that glorious sunshine ensures a plentiful supply of Vitamin D, contributing to a generally brighter disposition and fewer instances of seasonal sadness in our country. Plus, let’s face it, everyone looks effortlessly cool wearing a pair of shades, adding a touch of timeless Mediterranean chic to daily life!

The Enduring Legacy of Olives and the Call of the Sea

Greece’s fame for its olive oil and olives is deeply rooted in our history and daily existence. This verdant crop forms a huge, integral part of my life and the lives of countless Greeks. Every year, around Christmas time, our family tradition involves heading to the groves for olive picking, a communal and cherished activity. We then take our harvest to be pressed, yielding the freshest, most exquisite olive oil – a liquid gold that features prominently in nearly every meal I prepare. It’s more than just an ingredient; it’s a staple, a heritage, and a flavor that defines Greek cuisine.

The olive branch carries an even deeper, more profound meaning. In ancient times, it was meticulously crafted into a wreath, bestowed upon the victorious athletes of the Ancient Olympic Games. This was their ultimate prize, symbolizing not wealth or power, but virtue, honor, and the pinnacle of achievement. To this day, the olive branch remains an emblem of peace, prosperity, and endurance, its ancient significance resonating through modern Greek culture.

And then there’s the driftwood. Living close to the shore, as many Greeks do, especially those inhabiting our beautiful islands, the beach and the bay are not just places to visit, but an intrinsic part of our lives. Though I don’t reside on an island, the sea’s presence is a constant, comforting backdrop. Driftwood, weathered by the waves and sun, tells tales of the ocean’s journey and stands as a natural sculpture, reminding us of the timeless beauty and wild spirit of our coastline. Collecting these pieces is a small, grounding ritual, connecting me directly to the elemental forces of nature that shape our land.

Echoes of Antiquity: Ruins, Mountains, and Mythology

Greece is globally renowned for her omnipresent ancient ruins, testaments to a civilization that shaped the Western world. The photograph you see is of the legendary Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, a moment I captured many years ago. What’s truly remarkable is how little these majestic structures change; they stand as enduring sentinels of time. These ruins aren’t confined to designated sites; they are literally everywhere. It’s a common tale to hear of someone embarking on a new home construction project, only for excavation to reveal ancient artifacts or foundations, inevitably halting progress. Our land is truly a living museum, where the past is constantly unearthed.

My profound affection for the mountains of Greece is well-known, a sentiment likely rooted in my upbringing in a valley town completely encircled by these majestic peaks. There’s a comforting embrace in their presence, a sense of timeless grandeur that complements the ancient structures they shelter.

Returning to Delphi, it was revered as the “navel of the world” in ancient times. According to mythology, Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the world, and they met at Delphi, marking it as the Earth’s center. Our lives here are inextricably intertwined with mythology and the Greek gods. While we no longer worship them, their stories, quirks, and epic sagas provide endless opportunities for conversation, humor, and reflection. We often speak of them as if they’re still around, their personalities as vibrant and intriguing today as they were millennia ago, reminding us of the rich narrative tapestry that underlies our everyday lives.

The Art of Craftsmanship: Pottery and the Spirit of Greek Arts

Pottery holds a deeply personal and culturally significant place in our lives. I was born and raised in a quaint small town adorned with numerous pottery shops. I vividly recall, as a young girl, exploring these charming establishments, marveling at the craftsmanship and delighting in purchasing little pottery cups. Many of the plates and decorative items were beautifully hand-painted, each piece a unique expression of artistry and tradition. Those early experiences, surrounded by such tangible creativity, undoubtedly nurtured my own artistic leanings and appreciation for handmade crafts.

Years later, I came to fully realize that much of my passion for crafts and artistic expression stems directly from that small town. Here in Greece, we have an immense appreciation for the arts, extending far beyond just the handmade. Our love for theater, for instance, dates back to ancient times, with its philosophical roots and profound dramatic traditions still thriving. It’s a remarkable aspect of our culture that nearly every town, no matter how small, boasts its own theatrical group. This enduring dedication to performance, visual arts, and craftsmanship underscores a vibrant, living cultural heritage that continues to inspire and connect generations.

The Irresistible Embrace of the Aegean Sea

This next item needs absolutely no elaborate introduction, for it represents one of my most profound loves: the beach and the sea. The Corinthian Bay, with its sparkling, crystal-clear waters, extends an irresistible invitation to dive in and surrender to its refreshing embrace. It’s a vision of pristine beauty that truly leaves you breathless.

For me, the optimal time for a swim, a moment of pure bliss, is early in the morning, precisely around 9 AM. At this hour, the water has achieved a delightful warmth, perfectly inviting without being overly hot, ensuring you won’t emerge resembling a sun-scorched lobster. Crucially, the early morning hours mean fewer people, allowing for an undisturbed communion with nature. Lying on the beach, with the gentle rhythm of the waves as your only companion, becomes a deeply meditative and perfect activity. And, of course, the simple joy of shell collecting is always a delightful bonus, offering little treasures from the deep to cherish and remember.

Seafaring Dreams and Wisdom’s Emblem

The miniature wooden boat, a charming little piece, symbolizes my husband’s enduring love for the sea and, more specifically, for fishing—his all-time favorite activity. If only the seas were teeming with more fish, he would undoubtedly be in his personal fishing heaven. Beyond the catch, fishing offers him an unparalleled escape, a perfect way to unwind and disconnect from the everyday hustle. There’s truly nothing quite like the profound tranquility of being out on a boat in the middle of the bay, whether it’s bathed in the gentle glow of the morning sun or mesmerized by the vibrant hues as the sun sets over the horizon. It’s a timeless connection to nature that many Greeks share.

And that delicate little marble owl? That’s a cherished souvenir I acquired at the airport as I departed Mytilene what feels like a lifetime ago, after a wonderful vacation. I was much younger then, living in the States, but I felt an undeniable urge to carry a piece of Greece with me. The owl, as many know, is the sacred symbol for the Goddess Athena (also known as Minerva), who embodies knowledge, wisdom, strategic warfare, and crafts. This small marble figurine is more than just a memento; it’s a tangible link to ancient wisdom and the enduring intellectual legacy of Greece, a subtle reminder of the profound depth that lies beneath its beautiful surface.

The Grandeur of the Parthenon: A Glimpse into Classical Perfection

The book you see featured in my flat lay is dedicated entirely to Greece, a visual and textual journey that aims to capture the breathtaking beauty of this incredible country. It’s the kind of place that consistently leaves visitors awestruck and breathless with its splendor. Specifically, it’s opened to a page showcasing the magnificent Parthenon in the background, an image that epitomizes the very essence of classical architecture and ancient Greek civilization.

The Parthenon, the temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, stands as the zenith of classical architectural achievement.
