Dört Yıllık Blog Serüveni: Öğrendiğim Büyük Ders

Celebrating Four Years: A Journey of DIY, Discovery, and a Life-Changing Wellness Revelation

Today marks a truly special milestone for me – my four-year blog anniversary, or as I affectionately call it, my “blogoversary”! It’s genuinely hard to believe that four entire years have passed since I first embarked on this creative adventure, pouring my heart and soul into this little corner of the internet. What began as a passion project has blossomed into something far more significant, guiding me through myriad experiences, transformations, and perhaps the most important lesson I’ve ever learned, the hard way.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, I’ve decided to diverge from my usual DIY project showcase. Instead, I want to take a heartfelt look back at this past year, reflecting on the incredible journey it has been. It was a year filled with exciting home transformations, unexpected challenges, and ultimately, a profound personal awakening that reshaped my entire approach to life. Join me as I share the highs, the lows, and the invaluable wisdom gained over these four remarkable years, centered around a critical lesson about self-care and resilience.

A Glimpse into the Year: Winter Wonders, Iconic Walks, and DIY Adventures

This past year kicked off with a breathtaking winter wonderland right here in our New York neighborhood. The landscape transformed into a truly magical scene, blanketed in pristine snow, creating an ethereal beauty that captured our hearts and made the chilly days feel a little more enchanting. Amidst this picturesque setting, we also embarked on an unforgettable adventure: a walk across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge! This monumental structure, offering panoramic views of the city skyline, had long been on my bucket list, and experiencing its grandeur firsthand was nothing short of exhilarating. These early moments set a tone of discovery and appreciating the beauty around us, even as we continued to settle into our new lives.

In an attempt to combat the biting winter chill, I promptly dove into a DIY project to create a cozy throw from an old velour blanket. The concept was simple and charming: transform a tired old blanket into something new and inviting with the addition of some stylish yarn fringes. Unfortunately, the blanket was far older and more threadbare than I had realized, and despite my best efforts, it sadly fell apart soon after. It was an epic fail, and if there’s one thing I strive for on this blog, it’s honesty. So, consider this a cautionary tale: always ensure your base blanket is robust and not on its last threads! While the idea was solid, the execution highlighted the importance of good quality materials – a lesson learned, albeit with a rather short-lived cozy throw.

Spring into Action: Settling into New York Life and Home Transformations

As the last vestiges of winter melted away, spring arrived, signaling a time to literally “spring into action.” Having moved from the vibrant landscapes of Greece to the bustling energy of New York in late summer 2017, we were still very much in the process of getting organized and making our new house a home. There were rooms to paint, spaces to decorate, and endless organizational challenges to tackle. This period was a whirlwind of activity, as we gradually breathed life into each corner of our new residence, infusing it with our personality and creating functional, beautiful spaces.

The first room I proudly shared with you all was the girls’ bedroom. This project was a true delight, a collaborative effort where my daughters had the final say in its design and decor. We had an absolute blast painting and decorating it together, transforming it into a space that truly reflected their personalities and tastes. Seeing their joy and ownership over their new room was incredibly rewarding. My blog is primarily dedicated to DIY projects, and I always strive to showcase them within the context of my own home, demonstrating how you too can discover creative solutions and revitalize what you already possess. A year later, the room retains much of its original charm, though, as expected, the bookshelves are now overflowing with treasures, and a lovely collection of candles has appeared, thanks to one of my girls embracing the art of candle making.

Another significant undertaking was the transformation of a rather dated 1970s TV cabinet that had been sitting somewhat forlornly in our foyer, serving merely as storage since its television days were long over. I had been itching to get my hands on this project, mainly because I saw such incredible potential lurking beneath its old-fashioned exterior. Bringing it back to life truly felt like a labor of love, demanding a good deal of blood, sweat, and perhaps a few tears (though thankfully, no actual blood!). The process was intensive, requiring meticulous sanding, priming, and painting, but the vision I held for it spurred me on. In the end, the cabinet was everything I had imagined and so much more – a stunning focal point that perfectly blended vintage charm with modern aesthetics. To this day, I often find myself sitting on the couch, gazing at it, marveling at its rediscovered beauty, and contemplating what a shame it was that such a gem had sat neglected for so long, merely collecting dust.

A New Chapter: Welcoming Tatou and Navigating New Beginnings

Amidst the dust and paint fumes of our home improvement projects, a wonderful new chapter began: we adopted a puppy! Little Tatou bounded into our lives and instantly filled our home with an immeasurable amount of joy and laughter. I honestly never imagined that a pet could transform our family dynamic in such a dramatic and positive way. We had owned dogs before in Greece, but they always stayed at the farm; having a dog *inside* the home was a completely new experience, and the difference it made to our daily lives was profound.

Tatou’s arrival was incredibly timely, as we truly needed that extra dose of comfort and companionship during what was a particularly challenging period. Adjusting to life in New York after so many years in Greece proved to be much harder than anticipated. The relentless pace of the city, the demanding work schedules, and the significant cultural shifts were a constant adjustment for all of us, especially my girls. Tatou, with his boundless energy and unconditional affection, became a cherished source of solace and helped immensely to ease our transition. His playful antics and loving presence created a much-needed sense of normalcy and happiness amidst the ongoing changes, proving to be an invaluable member of our family.

The Unforeseen Challenge: A Life-Altering Health Revelation

As if adjusting to a new city and managing home projects wasn’t enough, the summer brought a far more serious challenge: a diabetes diagnosis. I was told my Blood Glucose Level was an alarming 11. For anyone familiar with these numbers, you understand the gravity of that statement – I was, quite literally, a walking time-bomb. It’s tempting to fabricate a story about how this came as a complete shock, but in all honesty, I had been neglecting my body for years. An excessive indulgence in sweets, coupled with a severe lack of physical activity, was clearly not a recipe for good health. One of my daughters has a passion for baking, and as you can imagine, resisting a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie (or five!) or her truly irresistible cheesecakes was a battle I consistently lost.

I had ignored the myriad warning signs my body was sending. Chronic tiredness and sluggishness became my constant companions. I was perpetually hungry, which made absolutely no sense given how much I was eating throughout the day. And spending countless hours seated in front of the computer certainly exacerbated the problem, further contributing to my sedentary lifestyle. When I finally went to the doctor’s office, intending only to get a referral for something minor, I walked out with a throbbing headache, a stack of prescriptions that felt like a full-time job to manage, and a deep sense of despair. To say I was depressed about this news would be a monumental understatement. Yet, I knew deep down that I, and no one else, was to blame. I should have known better, but I had simply continued to sweep my unhealthy habits under the rug, hoping they would somehow disappear. Even a therapeutic visit to the beautiful Botanical Gardens, a place usually filled with tranquility and joy, couldn’t lift my spirits.

Imagine walking around with a ticking grenade inside you, completely unaware of the danger, or even worse, burying your head in the sand out of sheer ignorance or stubbornness. That was precisely my situation. That doctor’s visit wasn’t just a consultation; it was an urgent, life-altering wake-up call that demanded immediate attention. It was the harsh realization that my health, my most precious asset, was in critical jeopardy, and only I had the power to reclaim it.

Embracing Wellness: The Road to Recovery and Renewed Vitality

With the stark reality of my diagnosis, I knew I had to tackle this challenge head-on; it instantly became my absolute priority. I made a drastic decision to stop eating sweets cold turkey, a significant sacrifice for someone with a lifelong sweet tooth. I started paying meticulous attention to every label on every package, scrutinizing ingredients and nutritional information with newfound dedication. To further my understanding and commitment, I sought guidance from a Diabetics Educator, who provided invaluable insights and strategies for managing my condition. I meticulously tracked my insulin intake and diligently monitored my blood sugar levels, making sure I understood every fluctuation and what caused it. This period was intense, demanding unwavering focus and self-discipline.

Alongside dietary changes, physical activity became a cornerstone of my new routine. I began walking everywhere, with my energetic pupster, Tatou, by my side and sometimes on my own. These walks weren’t just about exercise; they were moments of mindfulness and commitment to my well-being. As I often say, managing my health effectively had truly become my full-time job. This intense focus on personal wellness explains why I wasn’t able to dedicate as much time to new blog projects over the summer. Instead, I opted to share some cherished “oldies but goodies” from my archives, ensuring I still provided content while dedicating myself fully to my recovery.

One of my ‘oldies but goodies’ projects: a beautifully upcycled metal frame table.

I had previously envisioned a mood board for our master bedroom – a surprisingly tiny space that doubles as a craft room and my office. However, it was incredibly difficult to focus on design choices and decor when the weight of my health concerns occupied my every thought. I found myself endlessly procrastinating on color selections and furniture arrangements. Yet, I held onto the belief that once this room was finally finished and organized, I would gain the mental clarity needed to better organize my life as a whole. And, remarkably, that’s precisely what happened. Completing that room became a catalyst for broader change. I not only found a dedicated spot for all my medicine, but I also established a strict schedule for myself, adhering to it with unwavering discipline. It became clear that discipline, in every aspect of my life, was the ultimate key to progress and well-being.

The Transformative Power of Wellness: Energy Unleashed

The fascinating thing was, the more organized and disciplined I became in my daily routines, the more dramatically my blood glucose levels plummeted. Without any intentional dieting, the pounds simply started melting away. My secret? I had merely cut out processed sugar and adopted a mindful approach to my carbohydrate intake. That was it – no complex diets, no extreme measures, just consistent diligence in these fundamental changes. Ha! I say “that’s it” as if it were a minor adjustment, but in reality, it was profoundly life-changing!

Suddenly, I was bursting with energy, no longer plagued by the exhausting highs and lows of blood sugar fluctuations. This newfound vitality was so immense that instead of just finishing the master bedroom, I felt compelled to tackle even more ambitious projects! In an incredible two-day spree, I managed to paint the entire kitchen (granted, it’s about the size of a closet, but still!), the dining room, the entryway, and even the living room. For the living room, I went all out, creating a captivating cloudy effect accent wall that continues to make me swoon to this day! There’s no way I would have even attempted such an ambitious feat in my previous sluggish state. But now, with a clear mind and an abundance of energy, I felt unstoppable. And let me tell you, I’m no spring chicken; this surge of vigor felt like a miraculous second youth.

Bolstered by this incredible surge of energy and the fantastic news from my doctor’s office, I was finally able to return to and successfully finish the master bedroom! My mind was clear, my vision precise, and I knew exactly what I wanted for this serene sanctuary. The culmination of my health journey and the completion of this significant DIY project felt deeply intertwined, marking a period of profound personal growth and renewal.

And then, for Christmas, I received the most precious gift imaginable: my blood glucose numbers had dropped so significantly that my doctor took me off insulin! High five indeed! I had miraculously regained control over my health in so many profound ways, and incredibly, in such a short span of time. To celebrate this triumph and our restored vitality, we even took a long, invigorating walk to Rockefeller Center to admire the iconic Christmas Tree, braving the freezing weather with newfound energy and joy. It was a tangible symbol of how far I had come, transforming from a state of illness to one of vibrant health.

Looking Ahead: Future Projects and an Unwavering Commitment to Health

The start of this new year finds me energized and bursting with fresh ideas and exciting new projects already in motion. I’m eager to finally complete the living room, though that particular transformation will take a bit more time as I plan to invest in a new sofa to truly anchor the space. Everything else in the room, however, I envision repurposing or upcycling myself, maintaining my commitment to creative, sustainable home decor. The dining room also calls for a bit more work, and perhaps I’ll enlist my talented daughter to help me create some bespoke artwork to personalize it further.

But no matter how many projects I juggle or how ambitious my DIY plans become, one thing remains constant and non-negotiable: I will never, ever slack off on my health again. I have been given this precious gift of good health – a second chance at a vibrant life – and I am absolutely determined not to squander it or take it for granted, as I unknowingly did before. This journey has taught me that true creativity and joy can only flourish when one’s foundation of well-being is strong and prioritized above all else. My future path is now inextricably linked to maintaining this precious state of health, allowing me to embrace new challenges and adventures with boundless energy and a clear mind.

The Profound Lesson: Prioritizing Self-Care for the “Sandwich Generation”

The bottom line is this: none of these exciting projects, nor this incredible journey of renewed vitality, would have ever materialized if I hadn’t made that fateful summer trip to the doctor for something entirely different. My unexpected diagnosis became the pivotal turning point, forcing me to confront years of neglect.

As mothers, so many of us find ourselves caught in what’s often termed the “sandwich generation.” We are simultaneously caring for our children, nurturing their growth, and supporting our elderly parents, often navigating their complex needs. All too frequently, we become so deeply engrossed in looking after everyone else that we inadvertently neglect ourselves, pushing our own well-being aside to the point where we can no longer function optimally. This was precisely my predicament; at my lowest point, I was truly no good to anyone. My energy was depleted, my spirits were low, and my ability to be present for my loved ones was severely compromised.

I am incredibly grateful to my amazing family for rallying around me, offering unwavering support, and helping me wholeheartedly embrace my new, healthier lifestyle. Their understanding and encouragement made all the difference. They have all been wonderfully supportive, adopting healthier eating habits alongside me, creating a collective environment of wellness. And once the weather warms up a bit more, there will be countless invigorating walks with Tatou, filling our days with fresh air and shared joy.

I sincerely hope that you can all learn from my hard-earned mistake and prioritize your health. Please, make it a point to visit your doctor for annual checkups. Moms truly are the backbone of the family, the indispensable foundation upon which everything else stands. If we are not well, if our own health falters, then nothing else works properly. Am I right? Our well-being isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for the health and happiness of our entire family unit.

I honestly have no idea how long I had been living with diabetes. Perhaps it began during my time in Greece, where a delightful pastry shop seemed to beckon from every corner? Or maybe it manifested later. I had deluded myself into believing that the constant sluggishness and fatigue were merely symptoms of the Greek heat, but I never bothered to question why I felt the same way even during the cool winter months. The signs were there, but I chose to rationalize them away.

All I know now is that I feel half my age, or at the very least, half of what I felt like before. Perhaps before, I felt like an 80-year-old, and now I finally feel my actual age? Either way, the transformation is undeniable. I now possess an abundance of energy, and then some, ready to tackle life with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

And let me assure you, I am not special, nor am I a Hercules. As I mentioned before, my transformation simply involved making conscious choices: drastically cutting down my sugar intake, diligently watching my carbohydrates, and striving to consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. For exercise, I incorporated walking wherever possible – even a leisurely stroll through the shopping mall counts! These simple, consistent changes accumulated to create a monumental shift in my health.

I truly feel as though I have been granted a second chance at life, a genuine miracle. My doctor even jokes that I should be the poster child for diabetes recovery! At my age, conventional wisdom suggests one should be winding down, but I am joyfully headed in the opposite direction. I have a multitude of plans, a renewed sense of purpose, and an exciting new road to follow into the future. This journey has not only revitalized my body but has also ignited my spirit, filling me with optimism and a fierce determination to live life to the fullest.

I will say it again, with all the conviction in my heart: We all absolutely need to take care of ourselves first and foremost. If you are experiencing persistent tiredness or a general feeling of sluggishness, please do not ignore these warning signs. Go for a checkup, have your blood glucose levels scrutinized, and take proactive steps for your well-being. Take care of yourself, because ultimately, no one else can or will do it for you with the same dedication and understanding.

This past year has undoubtedly been a roller coaster of emotions and challenges, but hitting rock bottom was precisely what I needed. It was a powerful, undeniable wake-up call that irrevocably set me on the right path toward lasting wellness. My sincere hope is that my hard-earned lesson can also serve as a source of motivation for you on your own personal wellness journey! As I celebrate four incredible years of blogging, I do so with a clean bill of health and a heart full of gratitude. How about you? What steps will you take towards a healthier, happier future?
