The vibrant traditions of Greece, deeply rooted in history and Orthodox faith, have seen an interesting evolution with the modern embrace of Valentine’s Day. While many Western cultures have celebrated this day of love for centuries, its arrival in Greece is a relatively recent phenomenon, gaining widespread popularity only since the 1980s. Historically, the Greek Orthodox Church does not observe a Saint Valentine in the same way the Roman Catholic Church does, which initially made the adoption of the holiday feel a bit foreign. However, like so many other cultural imports from the west, the allure of romance and connection has proven universal, and we have enthusiastically come to embrace this special day dedicated to love.
Valentine’s Day in Greece is now a joyous occasion, observed by individuals of all ages, from youthful sweethearts to seasoned couples. The custom revolves around the exchange of thoughtful gifts, vibrant flowers, or delectable chocolates – classic expressions of affection that transcend borders. As Greeks, we famously cherish any opportunity to gather, celebrate, and socialize, and Valentine’s Day provides the perfect excuse! On a more personal note, my husband and I often opt for a quieter, more intimate celebration of Valentine’s Day. While the city’s restaurants might be bustling, our tradition leans towards the cozy comfort of our home. We love to light a big, roaring fire, creating a warm and inviting ambiance, and then settle down for a romantic, candlelit dinner. It’s a moment of tranquility and connection, away from the crowds, allowing us to truly focus on each other. Whether it’s a gourmet dinner or a simple breakfast, the essence remains the same: celebrating love in a way that feels most authentic to us.
DIY Valentine’s Day Framed Heart Craft: Simple, Sweet, and Sustainable
Today, I’m thrilled to share a quick, easy, and incredibly charming craft project perfect for Valentine’s Day: a beautiful Framed Heart. This project is a fantastic way to add a touch of romance to your home decor, and it’s wonderfully sustainable as it utilizes materials you likely already have on hand. It’s all about repurposing and giving new life to forgotten items, transforming them into something meaningful and festive. You can truly use any old frame you have around the house, making this a versatile and budget-friendly endeavor.
Gather Your Simple Supplies:
- An old picture frame (any size will do!)
- A piece of festive fabric (red, pink, or floral patterns work wonderfully for Valentine’s Day)
- Two pieces of flexible wire (old clothes hangers are perfect for this)
- Twine (jute, hemp, or cotton twine for a rustic look)
- A small length of ribbon (white or a coordinating color)
- Scissors or wire cutters
- Sandpaper or a knife (for distressing, optional)
Step-by-Step Guide to Your Valentine’s Heart Frame:
1. Choosing and Preparing Your Frame
For this project, I started with a frame that already held sentimental value, having been a part of my very first blog project. This highlights the beauty of upcycling – taking something old and giving it a fresh purpose. The key is to find any frame that speaks to you. Don’t worry about its current state; we’ll be giving it a lovely refresh. Mine had a wooden piece in the center, which was previously decoupaged with fabric. The first step is to carefully remove this central piece from your chosen frame. If your frame has glass, remove that too for safety and ease of crafting.
2. Adding Your Festive Fabric Background
Now, for the “lazy blogger” secret – and a smart one at that! Instead of painstakingly removing the original decoupaged fabric from the wooden insert, I simply wrapped a beautiful red flowery fabric directly on top of it. This method is brilliant because it’s non-committal. After Valentine’s Day has passed, I can easily remove the red fabric and have my original floral artwork back. There’s no need for messy gluing or dealing with stubborn adhesives later. This temporary cover allows for seasonal decoration without permanent alteration. Choose a fabric that evokes romance – a classic red, a gentle pink, or even a subtle pattern that complements your existing decor.
3. Crafting Your Wire Heart Forms
Next, we move to the heart of the project – quite literally! I found two pieces of flexible wire, which I believe must have been salvaged from old clothes hangers. These are perfect because they are sturdy yet pliable enough to bend by hand. Begin by shaping each piece of wire into a rough hoop. Then, gently manipulate each hoop into a heart shape. Don’t strive for absolute perfection here; the charming, handmade quality of slight imperfections adds to the rustic appeal of the craft. Embrace the organic curves and unique character of your hand-bent hearts.
4. Embracing the “Twine Lady” Within
And what did I do with these wire hearts? Why, I channeled my inner “Twine Lady” and let loose with my favorite crafting material! I wrapped that heart in no time, working neatly to cover the wire completely with natural twine. The tactile texture of twine adds a wonderful rustic and earthy feel to the project. Once the heart was fully wrapped, I used the ends of the twine to fashion a simple yet elegant bow at the top, adding a decorative flourish. 5. Assembling and Finishing Touches
With the beautifully wrapped twine heart ready, it’s time to bring all the elements together. Position your fabric-covered wooden piece back into the frame. Now, take a tiny white ribbon – or any ribbon that complements your chosen fabric – and use it to dangle your twine heart gracefully over the framed background. Secure the ribbon at the top of the frame, ensuring the heart hangs centrally and elegantly. The contrast between the soft fabric background and the textured twine heart creates a visually appealing focal point, embodying simple romance. This setup provides just the right amount of festive red without overwhelming the aesthetic.

Back in my early crafting days, before I truly understood the magic of sandpaper, I confess to using a knife to achieve this effect! Thankfully, I’ve come a long way since then, and now I prefer the controlled, subtle beauty that sandpaper provides. Gently rub the edges and raised areas of the frame with fine-grit sandpaper to reveal glimpses of the wood underneath, creating a beautiful aged look that adds depth and character to your piece.
