A Two Year Journey My Essential Reads

Can you believe it? Two incredible years have passed since I first launched this blog, and what a journey it has been! It feels like only yesterday I was typing my very first post, a simple greeting to the world, brimming with nascent enthusiasm and a complete lack of photography skills. Time, indeed, has an astonishing way of flying by when you’re deeply immersed in something you love.

Last year, as I celebrated my one-year blogoversary, I shared a more personal reflection on my life and the serendipitous path that led me into the vibrant world of blogging. This year, I want to take a moment to look back at the past twelve months, highlighting the creative endeavors, the valuable lessons learned, and the connections forged. I’ll also share some of my absolute favorite projects—though you might find that my personal favorites aren’t always the ones that generated the most buzz. More profoundly, I want to delve into what truly makes blogging significant to me. As I tend to get a bit carried away with these milestones, I suggest you settle in with a warm cup of coffee or tea as we embark on this reflective conversation together.

For me, blogging transcends the definition of a mere job; it is a profound passion, especially the part where I get to immerse myself in creative projects. This is where true joy resides. While you may have already seen my most popular DIY projects of the year, today I am thrilled to share those that hold a special place in my heart, the ones that truly define my creative spirit.

The past year kicked off with a delightful spring project that genuinely surprised me with its outcome: a beautiful spring wreath. Having crafted many wreaths before, this particular creation marked a significant departure, as it was the first time I dared to incorporate such a diverse array of elements, blending treasures from nature with finds from around my home. Those charming branches you see intricately woven into the design? They came directly from my very own almond tree, making the project even more personal and meaningful. The process was a meditative exploration, combining textures and forms, resulting in a unique piece that celebrated the arrival of spring.

April proved to be an exceptionally bustling and transformative month. Alongside a wonderful group of friends, we embarked on an exciting new venture: launching the Sweet Inspiration Link Party. This community initiative has been flourishing ever since, becoming a vibrant hub for creativity and connection. Through it, I’ve had the immense pleasure of meeting countless talented bloggers, many of whom have become cherished friends. In fact, one of our incredible participants, Michelle from A Crafty Mix, eventually joined us as a co-hostess later in the year, bringing even more energy and camaraderie to our growing family.

This pivotal month also saw me bravely tackle a long-standing eyesore in my home: my rather unappealing fireplace. Inspired by a captivating blog post I had stumbled upon, it was the gentle, yet persistent, encouragement of my friend Kim—an artist I connected with through Facebook who isn’t a blogger herself—that finally gave me the push I needed to begin. This connection with Kim beautifully illustrates another delightful byproduct of blogging: the opportunity to connect with extraordinary individuals who become powerful sources of inspiration. I approached the fireplace renovation in two distinct stages, culminating in a final result that fills me with immense pride. Now, whenever I step into my home, this beautifully transformed fireplace is the first thing that catches my eye, a lasting testament to what can be achieved with a bit of courage and creative vision. I’m certain that without the motivation and community that blogging provides, I would never have dared to attempt such a significant home improvement project.

As May rolled around, I found myself crafting what quickly became my all-time favorite wreath—at least until the next inspired creation. This enchanting May Day wreath was born purely out of natural beauty and resourcefulness; it cost absolutely nothing, fashioned entirely from fresh flowers and verdant branches gathered directly from our farm. Even now, I often revisit photographs of this particular wreath, marveling at its simple elegance and secretly worrying that I might never be able to replicate its unique charm. Once dried, it gracefully transformed, taking on a nostalgic, timeless beauty that adorned our home for many months, a gentle reminder of spring’s fleeting splendor.

May also marked a significant milestone for the International Bloggers Club as we ventured into our very first furniture makeover challenge. This dynamic group, which we founded at the beginning of the year, has been an incredible platform for cultural exchange. We’ve collectively learned so much about each other’s countries, traditions, and unique cultural perspectives. As the wise old man in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” famously quipped, “In the end, we are all fruit.” This sentiment truly resonates within our club; these collaborative projects and the shared experience of the International Bloggers Club have only served to weave us closer together, transforming us into a supportive and inspiring global tribe.

Another standout favorite from the past year was the ingeniously crafted photo displayer, which I repurposed from discarded barbecue grill parts. I initially created this unique piece as a heartfelt gift for my husband on Father’s Day. However, its versatility quickly became apparent, proving suitable for far more than just showcasing cherished photographs. In fact, those very same grill parts were so inspiring that they found their way into several other creative projects throughout the year. I genuinely believe I managed to extract far more utility and aesthetic value from that single grill than anyone could reasonably expect! This project exemplifies my passion for upcycling and finding new life in forgotten objects.

Over the summer months, I dedicated myself to a challenging yet ultimately rewarding project: a vintage suitcase makeover. This endeavor proved to be significantly more intricate and time-consuming than I had initially anticipated. The process began with painstakingly painting the exterior, carefully restoring its worn facade. Subsequently, I embarked on the delicate task of decoupaging the interior with vintage maps, transforming its hidden compartment into a miniature world of exploration, as you can see in the image below. This project also marked the exciting commencement of my participation in the ArtDeco blogger outreach program, allowing me to experiment with their extensive range of paints. Today, this beautifully refurbished suitcase serves a practical and charming purpose, neatly housing all my sewing notions and ribbons. There’s immense satisfaction in having everything organized in one designated spot, and an even greater sense of accomplishment knowing that my basement now has one less dormant item, repurposed and brought back to life.

It seems summer is my season for organization, as I also tackled another easy yet personally gratifying project: a framed jewelry organizer, which I affectionately gifted to myself. This clever creation was part of a year-long blog hop where participants made handmade gifts each month, all in anticipation of Christmas 2016. You might ask how that particular gifting endeavor went? Well, truthfully, I ended up keeping most of the beautiful creations for my own family, a decision I am perfectly content with. There’s something uniquely special about crafting something beautiful and useful for your own home or loved ones.

And then we arrived in October, a month that will forever be synonymous with an utterly unexpected phenomenon. How to even begin explaining it? A humble pumpkin took center stage on the blog and, quite literally, took on a life of its own. Mr. Paranoid Man Pumpkin, with his quirky charm and distinctive personality, captured the hearts of my readers and became so incredibly popular that he ended up featuring in five distinct posts! Even as I write this, he sits proudly on my living room table, a constant, beloved presence. The affection for this character grew to such an extent that there have even been genuine requests for a dedicated Facebook fan page. And let’s not forget the ultimate tribute: he even boasts a beautiful painted portrait, skillfully created by the lovely Michelle of A Crafty Mix. This pumpkin’s story is a testament to the unexpected joys and connections that blogging can bring.

November brought another heartwarming collaboration with the International Bloggers Club, as we held a truly special gift swap. Each of us chose an item to lovingly makeover, with the unique twist that the other members of the club selected the specific project we would undertake. For me, the ladies collectively chose this magnificent antique cauldron, which I then had the immense pleasure of sprucing up and transforming just in time for Christmas. And you can absolutely bet that this beautifully repurposed piece has been in constant use ever since, bringing a touch of vintage charm to my home.

This antique cauldron makeover wasn’t just another project; it was a deeply special gift, a tangible expression of friendship from women spread across the globe. Without their collaborative spirit and gentle push, this beautiful old piece, rich with history and potential, would undoubtedly still be languishing in a forgotten corner of my basement, its true beauty hidden away. It’s a wonderful reminder of the power of community and creative encouragement.

It’s no secret to anyone who follows my blog that I harbor a deep and abiding love for photography. This passion is so central to my creative expression that I even maintain a dedicated gallery solely for my photographic work. Despite using a relatively simple camera, I tirelessly strive to improve my skills, believing firmly that the essence of great photography lies not in the sophistication of your equipment, but in the vision and dedication you bring to the craft. It’s about what you *do* with what you have, rather than what advanced gear you possess.

Last June, I initiated a special series designed to share my most popular Facebook “photos of the day” with all of you who might not be as active on Facebook as I am. This series was born out of a desire to extend my gratitude and share more beauty beyond a single platform. The entire collection of these cherished daily captures can be found within the aforementioned gallery, a visual chronicle of moments that resonated with my audience.

Among all my photographic endeavors, my absolute personal favorite has to be the breathtaking “Top of the World” photo essay. This particular collection captures a truly magical experience. My husband and I spontaneously decided to drive up into the mountains one rainy day, and as we ascended and reached the very summit, we were unexpectedly greeted by the most glorious sunset imaginable. To this day, I frequently thank him for that enchanting drive, a memory etched vividly in my mind, a perfect fusion of adventure and natural beauty.

Following closely as my second favorite is the captivating boat ride into the sunset. This trip held a special significance as we ventured in the opposite direction from our previous year’s unforgettable “Magic in the Morning” sunset excursion. Each journey, though different in direction, offered its own unique spectacle of light and color, reaffirming my love for capturing the ephemeral beauty of twilight over the water.

And of course, we cannot forget the delightful “sorts blogoversary” post where I proudly showcased my unique collection of doors. This series celebrated the architectural beauty and hidden stories behind various doorways, a testament to how even the most mundane objects can become subjects of artistic fascination when viewed through a passionate lens.

This past year has also been instrumental in shaping the identity and direction of the blog itself. I had the distinct honor of participating in the insightful blog series “Between the Lines,” graciously hosted by Katherine of Katherine’s Corner. In my contribution, I candidly explored what it means to be a blogger “of a certain age.” It was a wonderfully empowering experience, and much of what I wrote then still resonates deeply with me today. What truly astonished me was the sheer number of fellow bloggers who shared similar experiences and perspectives, fostering a powerful sense of community and validation.

Navigating the often-elusive world of Facebook for bloggers proved to be a significant learning curve. Despite my initial struggles, I eventually learned how to semi-handle its intricacies, a journey I chronicled in a guest post I proudly wrote for Nikki Frank-Hamilton’s blog. This was a memorable first for me, as I typically feel much more at home writing about my DIY projects and creative endeavors. It stretched my comfort zone and provided new insights into social media strategies.

Sadly, due to my ever-increasing blogging obligations and the need to prioritize, I made the difficult decision to discontinue the Greek translating services I had been providing. My focus shifted to concentrating on producing high-quality projects and exceptional photography, ensuring that the core content of my blog remained strong and impactful. However, to still support those interested, I did compile and share a comprehensive tutorial on how to translate text into Greek, empowering readers to bridge language barriers themselves.

As this retrospective illustrates, the past year has been nothing short of incredibly busy. Blogging, for all its visible creative output, is an immensely time-consuming and demanding endeavor. As I’ve often said, the projects and the beautiful photography are merely the tip of the iceberg; they are the enjoyable, visible fruits of labor.

Beneath the surface lies a vast landscape of technicalities and strategies that every blogger must master. This includes delving into the complex world of codes, navigating the ever-changing tides of social media platforms, understanding intricate algorithms, and meticulously managing pixels. The list of behind-the-scenes learning is seemingly endless. A major goal for me this past year was finally confronting and tackling the formidable beast known as SEO. Yes, I committed to a comprehensive overhaul, revisiting the very genesis of my blog and meticulously redoing everything from the ground up. It was a revelation to discover just how clueless I had been at the outset; Google, it turned out, barely registered my existence! And truly, where would any modern blog be without the omnipresent reach of Google? This challenging but essential work has been pivotal in ensuring my content finds its way to a wider audience.

Another significant milestone was successfully monetizing my blog. Receiving compensation, even if modest, feels incredibly rewarding, especially when you consider that I dedicate upwards of 60 hours each week to this platform. No one, regardless of how much they adore their work, wishes to labor entirely for free. This step has validated my efforts and provided encouragement to continue investing my time and passion.

This brings me to the profound and invaluable aspect of my blogging journey: the incredible community. This is undoubtedly the hardest part to articulate adequately, yet it is the most critical. I am eternally grateful to my phenomenal “tribe”—Pili, Katrin, Keri, and Michelle—for their unwavering support, constant encouragement, and boundless inspiration. I also want to extend a massive shout-out to my favorite blogging guru and dear friend, Nikki, whose guidance has been invaluable. My appreciation also goes out to my WAYWOW tribe and my Blogging Fifty group; I could continue listing names, but it wouldn’t be fair, as I’d inevitably omit someone important.

Have you noticed a recurring theme here? What has truly fortified me, empowered my growth, and significantly improved my blog over these two years is the rich, supportive fabric of my blogging community. This is the very community I didn’t even know existed when I first started this journey. Now, I am in daily contact with these incredible individuals, feeling as though they are my cherished neighbors, sharing virtual cups of coffee and exchanging insights (a special hello to Lisa!). Yes, we may all occasionally grumble about the quirks of Facebook, but for me, it has undeniably become the great unifier, fostering connections that transcend geographical boundaries. And no, for the record, I do not own any shares in the stock market; my endorsement comes purely from genuine experience!

So, what exciting new chapters does this coming year hold for me and for The Boondocks Blog?

As a fervent believer in the transformative power of paint, I am eagerly looking forward to deepening my understanding and expertise with the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co.’s remarkable products.
