Today, I’m thrilled to share a creative project that transforms an ordinary, inexpensive picture frame into stunning, rustic holiday wall decor. This DIY endeavor proves that with a little imagination and a few craft supplies, you can elevate simple items into cherished pieces or even thoughtful, handmade gifts for the festive season.
I embarked on this project with a humble plastic frame, the kind often overlooked in stores due to its basic appearance and affordable price tag. Despite its cheap plastic nature, I was determined to infuse it with character and charm, making it truly special and worthy of admiration, or even as a heartfelt present. Join me as we give this frame a remarkable farmhouse-style makeover, perfectly suited for adding a touch of warmth to your holiday home.

What You’ll Need for This Holiday Craft
-
A basic plastic picture frame. The one I used featured internal dividers, creating the appealing illusion of three separate frames within a single unit – ideal for our “JOY” theme.
-
Americana Chalky Finish Paint in Everlasting (or a similar chalk-style paint in white or off-white). This serves as an excellent primer, ensuring optimal adhesion and coverage on slick plastic surfaces.
-
Decoart Americana Acrylic Paints in red and yellow. These foundational colors will be mixed to achieve a rich, warm, and rustic brown tone.
-
Decoart Dazzling Metallics in Black Pearl. This metallic accent is key to adding depth and an authentic wood-like texture to our frame.
-
Access to a graphic design tool like PicMonkey (or any preferred photo editor/design software) to create your custom printable graphic.
-
A mini Christmas wreath or other festive embellishment to add a final touch of holiday cheer.
The How-To: Crafting Your Rustic Holiday Frame
Our journey began by thoroughly cleaning the plastic frame to ensure proper paint adhesion. Once clean and dry, I applied two coats of chalky finish paint to the front surface. This chalk-style paint acts as a phenomenal primer, effectively covering the original dark plastic and providing an ideal, slightly textured base for subsequent layers. It’s particularly effective on slick surfaces like plastic or laminate, preparing them beautifully for any paint or finish you wish to apply. I’ve successfully employed this exact priming technique in various projects, including a striking dresser makeover, showcasing its versatility.
Below, you can observe the back of the frame. In my excitement to start transforming this cheap plastic piece, I forgot to capture a ‘before’ shot of the front. But trust me, it was just standard, unremarkable black plastic – the kind that seems to multiply around the house!
The next crucial step was to create a custom rustic, warm, and woodsy color. To achieve this earthy brown, I combined red and yellow acrylic paints with a touch of Black Pearl metallic paint. The metallic paint is a game-changer here, not only contributing to the rich hue but also imparting a subtle shimmer and depth that mimics natural wood grain. With a brush, I applied two coats using long, deliberate strokes. This paint mixture dries remarkably fast, making the entire process efficient and enjoyable, rather than a tedious task.
Following the frame’s rustic transformation, the focus shifted to creating the “JOY” printable. This was effortlessly accomplished using the PicMonkey app – a tool I frequently use and highly recommend for its user-friendly interface. The process is straightforward: simply select your desired font, compose your graphic, and print it out. For this specific project, I chose the elegant De Walpergen Pica font, which lends a sophisticated yet timeless feel to the “JOY” design. You might notice the unique styling of the “J” – rest assured, it’s not a mistake but an intentional design element of the font itself. If you’re keen to learn more about incorporating custom fonts into your PicMonkey designs, you can find a helpful tutorial here. In fact, you can even download the very “JOY” printable I created for this project to use in your own craft!
A minor challenge arose when I realized the frame was longer than standard paper size, preventing a single, seamless print of “JOY.” However, a simple solution quickly presented itself: I printed the “JOY” sign twice. The first sheet was strategically placed at the bottom of the frame, exposing only the elegant “O.” The second sheet was then cut in half, allowing the “J” and “Y” sections to be sized perfectly to span the full width of the frame, ensuring a balanced and complete display. This creative approach to printing and cutting allowed the word “JOY” to fit beautifully within the frame’s dimensions.
It’s also worth reiterating that the frame’s original design included internal dividers, which naturally segregated the space into three distinct sections. This structural feature was the primary inspiration behind choosing the word “JOY,” as it perfectly fit within these three “windows,” enhancing the frame’s inherent design and making the message truly stand out.
The final, delightful step was to add a festive Christmas embellishment over the center of the frame. I chose a charming mini Christmas wreath, which instantly elevated the piece, adding a touch of traditional holiday warmth and completing the transformation. With this simple addition, the rustic “JOY” wall decor was officially done and ready to be displayed or gifted!

My aim for this project was to achieve an understated elegance, a look that feels both traditional and wonderfully adaptable. Depending on the chosen embellishment, this piece could effortlessly lean towards a rustic farmhouse aesthetic, making it incredibly versatile for various interior styles. The transformation is truly remarkable; what started as a cheap plastic frame now boasts a beautiful sheen, rich texture, and impressive depth. Even the minor imperfections contribute to its unique charm, making it a truly authentic piece of decor.
This completed decor piece makes an exceptional gift! In fact, that’s exactly what I did with mine. It now proudly hangs on the wall of a dear friend’s home, serving as a constant reminder that thoughtful, handmade gifts carry immense sentimental value. Imagine the delight of presenting such a personalized and beautifully crafted item to someone special during the holidays.
You can clearly see how straightforward it is to create personalized Christmas wall decor using minimal time and a handful of affordable materials. In this particular project, the addition of the Dazzling Metallics paint made an incredible difference, elevating the frame from ordinary to extraordinary, giving it that coveted rustic charm and depth. This simple yet impactful detail truly demonstrates the power of carefully selected craft supplies in transforming a project.
I sincerely hope this DIY project inspires you to reconsider those old, forgotten picture frames gathering dust in your home. This transformation was incredibly easy to execute and resulted in a stunning piece that’s perfect for your own holiday decorating or as a thoughtful Christmas gift. It’s a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your festive season without breaking the bank.
